The San Francisco Giants are in a perfect spot to make a major splash or two during the offseason. And they may do just that.

According to Bob Nightengale at USA Today, the Giants are expected to be one of the more ardent suitors for Yankees slugger Aaron Judge. Failing that, they are expected to pivot to the shortstop market.

A possible homecoming for Aaron Judge and San Francisco Giants

It is going to take a considerable deal to bring Judge back to the Bay Area, one that would be different than anything done in Farhan Zaidi’s era. However, the Giants also have just $89 million committed to next season, giving them plenty of room to make significant moves in free agency as they look to return to the postseason.

Judge would certainly be worth that sort of move from the Giants’ standpoint. Not only do they need help in the outfield, but they also need to find a middle of the order bat. He would solve both issues.

He will, however, require quite the commitment. Judge is in the midst of what could be a historic season, posting an excellent 205 OPS+ with 55 homers in his 606 plate appearances, chipping in 16 steals as well. He leads the majors in homers, RBI, runs scored, OPS, slugging percentage, and extra bases. His stellar season has kept the Yankees afloat as their lineup has struggled over the past few weeks.

There are going to be plenty of suitors for Judge’s services. Virtually every contending team with a large payroll will check in, especially given his ability to play center as well. The Giants will have a great deal of competition. However, they also have plenty of room to make such a move if they wanted.
