The Houston Astros could be getting a key part of their pitching staff back before the weekend.
According to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle, Justin Verlander is on the cusp of returning. Although nothing has been finalized, the plan is for Verlander to return to the Astros rotation for Friday’s start.
Houston Astros getting boost with Justin Verlander
He has not pitched since August 28 when he was removed from the game after striking out six over three innings. Verlander was diagnosed with a fascial disruption in his calf, an injury that had the potential to keep him sidelined for at least a portion of the postseason. Instead, if he does return on Friday, he will miss just a few days more than the minimum stay on the Injured List.
The timing of his return also gives Verlander the opportunity to be ready for the playoffs. He would likely get three or four starts before the postseason begins, giving him a chance to build himself back up and be comfortable for when the games matter once again. As the Astros are going to have one of the two first round byes, he will also get a chance for some extra rest before the Astros will need him to front their rotation once again.
If healthy, Verlander could be the piece needed to send Houston back to the World Series. He had been one of the favorites for the AL Cy Young award, his 1.84 ERA and 0.855 WHiP leading the majors. He also leads the American League with his 16 wins while striking out 154 batters against 26 walks in his 152 innings. There is no question that, even at 39 years old, he is the Astros’ ace.
The Houston Astros are set to get an important piece of their pitching staff back. Justin Verlander could return to the rotation on Friday.
