Buster Posey spent his entire career with the San Francisco Giants. The legendary catcher is continuing that partnership even into his retirement.

According to Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, Posey is purchasing an unknown percentage of the franchise. He is also being added to the team’s board of directors.

Buster Posey continues to be important part of San Francisco Giants

Posey’s position will not just be ceremonial. He is also being counted on to act as a bridge between the players and owners. Considering his stature in the organization and how well respected Posey is around the game, it is a perfect role.

His production on the field had already made Posey a prominent figure in franchise history. He was one of the better catchers in the game during his playing days, posting a .302/.372/.460 batting line with 158 homers and 293 doubles. His 12 year career came to an end with an even 1500 hits, an impressive showing for someone who spent the majority of his time behind the plate.

Naturally, Posey received quite a few accolades for his performance. He was a seven time All Star, winning the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year and 2012 NL MVP awards. Not only was he a five time Silver Slugger, but he also won the 2016 Gold Glove award. Given his honors and production, it is not a surprise that he was a key part of the Giants’ three championships in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Although he still had plenty left in the tank when he walked away, Posey could find his way to Cooperstown in the future.

This also makes him the right choice for such a role. The level of distrust between players and owners may not be where it was during the disastrous 1994-95 strike, but it is not that far behind. Having a respected figure such as Posey as a liaison is the right move for the organization.
