Miguel Andujar has been waiting for another chance. He is set to receive that with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

His time with the Yankees came to an end on Thursday as he had been designated for assignment. The Pirates claimed him off of waivers on Sunday, giving him that second chance he needed on another team.

Miguel Andujar latest former top prospect on Pittsburgh Pirates

It was not that long ago when such a move would have been a shock. Andujar appeared to be a building block during his fabulous rookie campaign in 2018, hitting for power as he appeared to be the long term answer at third base. Injuries stalled his career, and once he was healthy, he no longer had a place in the lineup.

This understandably led to a great deal of frustration culminating in his demanding a trade. While the Yankees eventually acquiesced to those demands at the deadline, nothing happened. He remained stuck in New York, a depth piece to be shuttled between Triple-A and the majors.

Now he gets a fresh start. The Pirates have collected several former top prospects including the likes of Michael Chavis, Zack Collins, and Michael Stephenson as they look to find a way to get those players to tap into their potential. Andujar is the latest addition to that group as the Pirates continue to look for major league caliber pieces in their rebuilding process.

He will certainly get his chances in Pittsburgh. Ke’Bryan Hayes, Bryan Reynolds, and Jack Suwinski may be the three players they could build a lineup around at this point in time. If Andujar can recapture the promise he showed in 2018, he could be another building block. But that is a big if.
