Former Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Didi Gregorius is not walking away from baseball just yet.

Although he has yet to generate any interest since being released by the Phillies, he is not giving up. He is reportedly heading to the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente, also known as the Puerto Rican Winter League as he will join the Cangrejeros of Santurce.

Former Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Didi Gregorius hoping to jumpstart career

Gregorius had a stellar showing during the pandemic shortened 2020 campaign to earn a two year deal with the Phillies worth $28 million. However, it did not take long for them to regret that decision as he failed to live up to his previous performance. There was talk that the Phillies would move on from Gregorius during the 2021-22 offseason but nothing materialized.

The Phillies ended up releasing Gregorius right after the trade deadline. He had produced a meager .210/.267/.345 batting line in his 640 plate appearances since the start of the 2021 campaign. He mustered only 14 homers and 25 doubles in that time while costing the Phillies 16 runs defensively.

It is possible that a strong showing in Santurce will lead to another chance. He will be 33 years old at the start of the 2023 campaign and is not that far removed from being a solid piece in the lineup. A team in need of help at short could bring him in on a one year make-good deal and hope that he can turn back the clock.

At this point, that is what Gregorius has to hope for. Despite possible openings around the league, he was unable to generate an offer for his services. Maybe having this time to rest and clear his head will allow for a strong performance in Puerto Rico. If that happens, he could get another chance in the majors.
