It is safe to say that the Seattle Mariners received a potential bargain in the Luis Castillo extension. It is also fair to wonder why the Cincinnati Reds were unable to make a similar offer.
As it turns out, that reluctance comes from their perceived window of contention. Castillo’s extension runs through 2027 with an option for 2028. The Reds, meanwhile, do not seem to feel as though 2024 or 2025 fit within their window.
Cincinnati Reds show disregard for fans in Luis Castillo comments
One could almost understand where the Reds are coming from. While they do have an interesting young nucleus, 2024 may be a little too early for them to start eyeing the postseason. The 2025 season, however, should be when they look to contend.
That is especially the case when one looks at the young players they have. Jonathan India and Tyler Stephenson are a solid beginning for the lineup while Noelvi Marte should be in the majors some time next year. Christian Encarnacion-Strand may not get the same top prospect buzz, but all he has done is hit as a professional. He could also be on the major league roster at some point next year.
The pitching side has several exciting arms. Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo have the potential to be top of the rotation starters. Graham Ashcroft should be a solid middle tier option. Alexis Diaz has emerged as an intriguing closing option. With Brandon Williamson and Andrew Abbott expected to be in the majors next year, the future could be bright in Cincinnati.
And that future would have been brighter with Castillo. Yes, they do not plan on contending next season or the year after, but that window should come up soon. Instead, the Reds are far more interested in generating as much money as possible to line the pockets of ownership. It is unfortunate since, with a few smart moves, the Reds could contend sooner than expected.
The Cincinnati Reds have zero expectations of competing in the near future. When it came to Luis Castillo or profits, profit margin won out easily.
