Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox were one of the biggest disappointments in the majors this past season. And now, they are coming up on a crossroads.

The Red Sox have numerous key pieces set to hit free agency as J.D. Martinez, Tommy Pham, and Nathan Eovaldi, amongst others, are slated to hit the open market. Xander Bogaerts is likely to opt out of the final three years of his deal and enter free agency. And the minor leagues do not have the pieces needed to fill all those holes, especially behind the plate after they traded Christian Vazquez at the deadline.

In theory, the Red Sox have options. They could easily look to bring Vazquez back. They had also been heavily involved in talks with the A’s for Sean Murphy, who would provide a long term answer behind the plate. However, neither move may be the type of splash that would get the attention of Red Sox fans, something that ownership has been focused on in the past.

Willson Contreras could draw that type of attention. The Chicago Cubs catcher has a middle of the order bat and would provide the type of pop that they desperately need. He would not solve all of their problems, but he could be a longer term answer while the Red Sox look to return to the playoffs.

The Boston Red Sox have a lot of holes to fill on the roster for next year. Willson Contreras would go a long way to their attempts to reload.
