Aroldis Chapman’s time with New York Yankees comes to inglorious end
It was a matter of time before Aroldis Chapman and the New York Yankees parted ways. That time has come sooner than expected.
Chapman has been left off of the Yankees roster for the American League Division Series. According to Greg Joyce of the New York Post, that decision was made because Chapman “blew off” a workout on Friday.
This has to be the end of Aroldis Chapman on the New York Yankees
Per the report, Chapman was supposed to throw batting practice on Friday. Instead, he did not show up, using what manager Aaron Boone said “was not an acceptable excuse.” General manager Brian Cashman took those comments a step further, saying that “there’s some questions about whether he’s been all in or not for a little while.” The Yankees reliever was also fined an undisclosed amount in addition to being left off the postseason roster and was asked to stay away from the team.
It had been clear that the relationship with Chapman and the Yankees had soured. The former All Star closer battled injuries and his command, eventually being replaced in the ninth inning. He posted a disappointing 4.46 ERA and a 1.431 WHiP in his 36.1 innings, striking out 43 batters with 28 walks.
Chapman was not exactly a given for the postseason roster in the first place. He had been a tightrope act all season, allowing three or more baserunners while recording one or fewer outs in six of his 43 outings. He walked at least two batters in eight of his outings as the Yankees could not count on him to record those important outs at the end of the game.
Given his performance and age, there was virtually no chance that the Yankees would have brought him back next season. Now that it has been revealed that there have been questions about his commitment and mindset this season, it is likely that Chapman’s last appearance in pinstripes has already taken place.
The New York Yankees are leaving Aroldis Chapman off the ALDS roster. Based on the Yankees’ comments, he may not be back again.
