The writing was on the wall when Carlos Correa signed his three year deal with the Minnesota Twins.
While Correa was theoretically locked up through 2024, there were caveats. He had an opt-out clause after the 2022 and 2023 seasons, allowing him to head back into free agency if he so desired. Rumors that he would opt out of the remaining two years had begun almost as soon as the ink had dried on the contract.
Carlos Correa makes expected move with Minnesota Twins
That expected move may be about to happen. According to reports, Correa is set to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract and re-enter free agency this offseason.
Although Correa had been regarded as the best shortstop in free agency last season, he had languished in free agency until signing on March 22. His expected price tag and injury concerns had made him the last of the top shortstops to sign, a development that no one saw coming at the beginning of the offseason.
Correa is expected to command an impressive contract again this offseason. He had done his part to earn that deal, posting a .291/.366/.467 batting line with 22 homers and 24 doubles in his 590 plate appearances. Although the shortstop market is likely to be crowded again this offseason, Correa should be able to get the type of contract he expected during the previous offseason.
He will certainly have plenty of suitors. Despite the spate of shortstops on the market last season, numerous teams have an opening at short heading into this offseason. Correa will be in high demand, even by the Twins if he is open to a reunion.
It was expected that Carlos Correa would opt out of his deal with the Minnesota Twins from the time he signed. That is reportedly happening this offseason.
