Carlos Correa’s expected move is reportedly happening.

He had been expected to out of his contract with the Minnesota Twins this offseason since the moment the pen touched the paper and the deal was announced. It was just a matter of time. That time will happen soon as Correa stated that he would opt out and re-enter free agency this offseason.

Three possible landing spots for Carlos Correa

Once again, Correa is going to be entering a crowded shortstop class in free agency. He will have to contend with the likes of Xander Bogaerts, Trea Turner, and Dansby Swanson. However, he will once again be one of the top free agents available, and with several teams needing a shortstop, should be able to get that long term deal he has coveted.

Carlos Correa is going to be one of the top free agents available this offseason. Let’s take a look at three possible landing spots.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs had been considered a likely suitor for Carlos Correa last offseason, with fans creating Christmas carols involving his name. Ultimately, the Cubs decided to go with a combination of Nico Hoerner and Nick Madrigal up the middle despite spending money on other pieces.

So much for those plans. While Hoerner was solid enough, Madrigal was injured most of the year and did not hit when he was in the lineup. The Cubs clearly need help up the middle if they are going to compete once again.

This offseason is a second chance to get it right. Correa would be an immediate upgrade to the lineup, slotting into the middle of the order while giving the Cubs a desperately needed bat. He would also provide a defensive upgrade as well, a former Gold Glove winner who can make the plays needed to improve the pitching staff.

Correa alone will not make the Cubs a contender. They still need to find an answer at both corner infield positions, possibly bring in a catcher, and upgrade their pitching staff. However, he would be a great start and a possible long term piece as they look to contend once more.

The Chicago Cubs had been linked to Carlos Correa last offseason. Maybe this time, those rumors will come to fruition.
