Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo is not giving up.

He is continuing to pursue his baseball career, looking for yeat another opportunity. This time, his journey is leading him back to the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente as he has signed with the Cangrejeros of Santurce.

Former Boston Red Sox bust Rusney Castillo not admitting it is over

There was a time when Castillo was one of the top prospects in the game. He was considered to be a future star, an all around player who would be a key part of the Red Sox outfield for years to come. He was handed a seven year deal worth $72.5 million in the belief that he would be exactly what they needed in the lineup.

Instead, Castillo turned out to be one of the biggest busts in Cuban prospect history. He appeared in a grand total of 99 games with the Red Sox, banished to the minors in 2016 never to return. Castillo had a disappointing 82 OPS+ with seven homers, 12 doubles, and seven steals in his 337 plate appearances before heading to Pawtucket.

He was finally free of the Red Sox after the 2020 season. After he was unable to secure a major league offer, Castillo turned to Japan in the hopes that he could resurrect his career. Instead, he battled injuries and struggled when he was healthy. Somehow, he managed to attract the attention of the Washington Nationals, who signed him to a minor league deal during the offseason.

While the Nationals theoretically had a spot for him as they had begun their rebuild, that would not be the case as he was released during spring training. Castillo spent the entire 2022 campaign in the Atlantic League, splitting his time between the Staten Island FerryHawks and Long Island Ducks.

But all it takes is one team to be willing to give Castillo a chance. Even if that does not happen in affiliated ball, a strong showing in Puerto Rico could allow him a chance in another foreign league so that he could continue his career.
