Three National League teams (the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Mets) won more than 100 games in 2022. As the NLDS concluded, all three were on the sidelines, planning for how to rebound in 2023.

So which 100-win team was the biggest disappointment in 2022? It’s a question worth examining, and one that inspired the use of the Spider-Man meme on Twitter on Sunday,

Atlanta and New York each won 101 games in 2022, with Atlanta earning the tie-breaker and winning the National League East. The Los Angeles Dodgers racked up 111 victories, making them the winningest team in all of baseball, yet they’re out of the postseason after the San Diego Padres flipped the script and overcame L.A.’s recent domination of the Interstate 5 rivalry.

Dodgers, Braves, or Mets: Which team had the most disappointing 2022 season?

There is a debate to be had for each of the three teams to be the most disappointing of the bunch. Atlanta is the defending World Series champion and put together an incredible run after June 1 to capture the NL East and secure the first-round bye. Yet the Braves were ousted by the Philadelphia Phillies in four games in the NLCS.

Elsewhere in the division, owner Steve Cohen made sure the Mets had a roster facelift before the season began, putting an experienced manager (Buck Showalter) together with an experienced team. However, the Mets couldn’t hold off the Braves in the NL East and were forced to play in the Wild Card round, where the Padres made them their first 100-plus-win victim.

However, it could well be the Dodgers who take home the dubious title of biggest disappointment. After their manager guaranteed a World Series win before the season even began, the target was on L.A.’s back. The pressure didn’t seem to phase the Dodgers as they had a cakewalk through the NL West, but when the postseason began, it was a different story at Chavez Ravine.

When your hometown newspaper starts promoting that the postseason is a waste of time and your team should be given a banner for being better than everyone else in the regular season, you know things have gone south quickly. Yes, we’re looking at you, Dodgers.

Expectations were high in all three cities, but after a season where Los Angeles was billed time and time again as “the team to beat” in the NL, those eye-popping 111 wins meant little more than a footnote in MLB history. For that, L.A.’s disappointing season outranks their foes in Atlanta and New York.
