The New York Yankees and Major League Baseball knew exactly what they were doing during Game Five and their weather delay.

It was clear that a storm was heading through the area – anyone with a weather app could have seen that. But the Yankees did not appear worried, opening the gates as they did at 5:00 PM. Eventually, at 6:20 PM, they announced that the game, slated to begin at 7:00 PM, would be delayed and more information would be coming soon.

Fans have right to be angered at New York Yankees, MLB

That never happened. The Yankees and Major League Baseball were absolutely silent until 9:35 PM when they announced that the game was postponed. And the kicker? No refunds or exchanges.

Yes, those tickets are still valid for the makeup time – 4:00 PM on Tuesday. MLB is essentially demanding that people leave work and get their kids early from school to get to the ballpark or kiss the money they spent goodbye. And then they wonder why they have problems growing the game…

Then there is the matter of the four and a half hour delay between when the gates were opened and the game was postponed. The Yankees were able to generate plenty of sweet concessions revenue since the crowd was stuck within the stadium. It was a chance to generate even more money without having a real intention of playing the game at all.

These types of tactics happen. The Red Sox have been repetitively slammed in the past for the same desire to squeeze every last cent out of their fanbase. But the Yankees are supposed to be different, claiming to be the definition of class when it comes to baseball. The way they handled the weather delay, and eventual postponement of Game Five, showed how far they have fallen since the days of George Steinbrenner.
