Ozzie Guillen could return to Chicago White Sox bench
Ozzie Guillen may be a longshot to return to the Chicago White Sox bench as their next manager. But there is still a chance.
According to MLB analyst Bruce Levine, the White Sox have yet to rule anyone out in their search for a new manager. This includes Guillen, their former manager from 2004 through 2011, and current pre and post-game analyst.
Ozzie Guillen is what the Chicago White Sox need
General manager Rick Hahn had specified certain requirements he has for the next manager. He wants someone with recent experience managing a contending team, an excellent communicator, and someone that understands how the game has evolved and yet has old school sensibilities.
Depending on how far back one wants to go in terms of “recent experience,” Guillen fits all of those boxes. He is someone whose personality would work in the clubhouse and with the roster, a familiar presence and a respected one. He has been lauded for his leadership and ability to build comradery during his time on the bench. Yes, he may say the wrong thing at times and rub people the wrong way, but no one will ever question his passion.
If Guillen does take over, a part of the White Sox coaching staff could come with him. Current Cubs third base coach Willie Harris said that he would return as a part of Guillen’s staff, saying “Hell yeah! I love Ozzie Guillen!”
Right now, there is no indication that Guillen has been interviewed, or is even being considered, for the managerial position. However, there is no questioning the loyalty he inspires and how much he cares. He may occasionally spar with his players but he would also have their back. He wants to win, knows how to win, and would fit perfectly into the locker room. And, as he has said in the past, no one knows that locker room better.
Ozzie Guillen has not been ruled out for the Chicago White Sox managerial opening. He could be exactly what they need on the bench.
