Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner feels like a forgotten man when it comes to the top shortstops in free agency.

While he is considered to be right at the top of the shortstop market with the likes of Carlos Correa, Xander Bogaerts, and Dansby Swanson, there has not been nearly as much speculation as to where he will end up. Teams are certainly interested, but a relative lack of chatter on the rumor mill to this point is a bit odd.

Three possible landing spots for Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner

Those rumors will eventually heat up. Turner will generate plenty of offers once free agency begins and teams get a sense of what the other options will cost. He could end up as a relative bargain as he has flown under the radar.

Where will Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner end up in free agency? Let’s look at three possible landing spots.

San Francisco Giants

One of the few rumors about Trea Turner involved the San Francisco Giants.

According to Bob Nightengale, the Giants are targeting significant pieces this offseason. Aaron Judge has been a frequent topic of conversation for San Francisco, but it is also clear that the Giants are looking at shortstop as a position to upgrade. Nightengale mentioned Turner as a possibility.

Turner would be a clear fit for the Giants. They used ten different batters in the leadoff spot last season, with six of them getting at least ten starts in that role. Adding a dynamic all around weapon such as Turner would solidify that spot in the lineup, helping fill out the rest of the order.

There would be a secondary bonus to signing Turner as well. Bringing him to San Francisco would also hurt the Dodgers, taking away a key part of their lineup. As the Giants are looking to chase down their rivals in the division, such an addition could make a tremendous difference.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs have been adamant that they are not going to deal with an extended rebuilding process and that they want to reload quickly.

They had begun that process in the 2021-22 offseason. Marcus Stroman and Seiya Suzuki were signed as pieces to bring them back to respectability, something that failed to materialize last year. It is not a surprise that the Cubs are already being linked to players in free agency, such as Jose Abreu and Aaron Judge.

Turner could also be an option. The Cubs need a shortstop after punting the position in free agency last season and there is reportedly mutual interest in a deal coming together. However, before anyone celebrates his putting the pen to the paper and heading to Wrigley, he also said that he wants to know what the Cubs’ plan is to turn the team into a contender once again if he is going to sign a long term deal.

Adding him to the lineup would be a start. Rafael Ortega, Christopher Morel, and Nick Madrigal are not exactly the types of players that should be leading off for any team with playoff aspirations. Turner is the dynamic piece that the Cubs need atop the lineup. But they need to convince him of that first.

The Chicago Cubs need a shortstop and a viable option atop their lineup. Trea Turner could be the answer to both.

Baltimore Orioles

The only other rumor about Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner is that he is believed to want to head east or play for a team that has spring training in Florida. He could do both while being close to his previous stomping grounds.

The Baltimore Orioles have declared their rebuild over. They were one of the biggest surprises in the majors this season, finishing over .500 and contending for a playoff berth over the final few games. It is time to start adding pieces and getting ready to re-establish themselves in the AL East.

One area that the Orioles could use is shortstop. Jorge Mateo had a decent season by his standards but is best suited as a utility option than a starter. Gunnar Henderson had spent the majority of his time in the minors as a shortstop but may be best suited for second base.

Enter Turner. He would add another dynamic element to the lineup, an impact player that would make a potentially dangerous Orioles lineup that much better. It is also a market that he is familiar with given his time with the Nationals. It would be as close to coming home again as he could possibly come.

The Baltimore Orioles are ready to contend once again. Bringing Trea Turner into the fold would be a step in that direction.
