The Boston Red Sox are clearly aware that they need to address their pitching staff. So far, it seems as though the focus is on the starting rotation.

The Red Sox have been linked to several pitchers, including their own free agents. There is mutual interest in a reunion with Rich Hill for 2023, although the timing of when Hill wants to pitch next season is in question. The Red Sox are also attempting to keep Nathan Eovaldi on a long term deal as well, solidifying one of the spots atop their rotation.

Boston Red Sox looking everywhere for pitching

This is on top of other possible targets. The Red Sox have been linked to Kodai Senga, Andrew Heaney, and Seth Lugo at various points in time as well. Tyler Anderson was considered a target until he signed a three year deal with the Angels. According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, Corey Kluber can be added to that list as well.

It makes sense for the Red Sox to be looking for as many pieces to the rotation as possible. Nick Pivetta is the only real given amongst the starters thus far. James Paxton and Chris Sale have been battered by injuries and cannot be counted on. Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and Garrett Whitlock could be battling for the final two places in the rotation. Even if Hill does return, the Red Sox are going to need a great deal of depth due to the number of questions that group of pitchers would come with.

The Red Sox also have a lot of work to do. They may need to find another shortstop, or second baseman, depending on what happens with Xander Bogaerts. Catcher, designated hitter, the outfield, first base, and the bullpen are all areas of need. Chances are, the Red Sox will look to spread around their free agency budget as they attempt to build a contending roster.

If so, that would mean that the Red Sox are not going to be shopping at the top of the market when it comes to the rotation. Even Senga could be too expensive for their tastes. The wide net they are casting could be a necessity as the Red Sox look at quantity over quality.
