Most of the focus on the New York Yankees in free agency will involve their attempts to retain Aaron Judge. That does not mean the Yankees are solely focused on the slugging free agent.

Instead, they are also looking at a pair of pitchers atop the market. According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Yankees have requested Jacob deGrom’s medical information. Jon Morosi from MLB Network also reported that the Yankees have been in contact with Kodai Senga’s representatives as well.

New York Yankees kicking tires on rotation upgrades

In theory, the Yankees have their rotation lined up for 2023. Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes would headline the starters, with Luis Severino, Frankie Montas, and Domingo German filling out the staff. The Yankees also appear to have solid depth with Clarke Schmidt as well.

But there is no such thing as too much pitching. The Yankees learned that the hard way when they traded Jordan Montgomery at the deadline once they acquired Montas. The former A’s starter was never able to get on track in New York as he battled injuries and inconsistency throughout the final half of the season.

It is also fair to wonder if that would be a championship caliber rotation. The Yankees second half collapse and struggles during the postseason led to yet another disappointing season. Tinkering around the edges and attempting to find bargains is no longer good enough, especially for a franchise that has not won a championship since George Steinbrenner passed away.

This also does not mean that the Yankees will land either pitcher. Asking for medical history and reaching out to representatives could be a matter of due diligence. But it is clear that the Yankees are refusing to accept the status quo and are looking to make the moves needed to bring another championship to New York.
