The Minnesota Twins want Carlos Correa to be their long term answer at shortstop. Correa himself appears to want to come back despite opting out of his contract. It is just a matter of getting the money to work.

This is something that the Twins are attempting to make happen. According to LaVelle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune, the Twins have made different offers to Correa, ranging from six to ten years and for different average annual values.

At this point, the dollar amounts on those offers remains unclear. However, they are likely to surpass the Twins’ largest contract to date – am eight year, $184 million extension that Joe Mauer had signed back in 2010. The Twins have also surpassed nine digits in a contract just three times, with Correa’s three year deal and Byron Buxton’s extension the only other times in franchise history that the $100 million mark has been surpassed.

If the Twins are going to bring Correa back they will need to shatter the franchise record. Correa is likely to command over $200 million even on the six year contract offer. The Twins say that they have money to spend and Correa could test that theory.

He is also someone that the Twins need to bring back if they are going to contend for the AL Central. Correa posted an impressive .291/.366/.467 batting line with 22 homers and 24 doubles over his 590 plate appearances. He is the type of piece that the Twins need in their lineup.

At this point, it is a matter of making the financials work. Correa is going to be heavily recruited this offseason as he may well be the top shortstop on the market. Add in a lack of quality options at the position in free agency in the near future, and he becomes even more valuable. It all means that the Twins may need to spend more than they would normally be comfortable with to keep him on board.
