According to one MLB insider, it isn’t a matter of if the Philadelphia Phillies will land a big-name free agent shortstop this offseason, but rather a matter of when and which one will find himself in the City of Brotherly Love in 2023 and beyond.

Rumors are swirling that the Philadelphia Phillies are in line for a big upgrade at shortstop

In a tweet, ESPN’s Buster Olney sends out words that are music to the ears of any Philadelphia Phillies fan.

We reported yesterday that the Phillies have “a good chance” to sign Trea Turner, considered by many to be at the top of the free agent shortstop class. Considered Philadelphia’s “top target” this offseason, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Turner would bring an immediate impact to the Phillies lineup, especially with the news that Bryce Harper will be out of the lineup at the beginning of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

However, even if things were to go south with Turner’s negotiations, ending up with any of the “elite” shortstops in Philadelphia would be looked at as a considerable win. That win could even be amplified in Dansby Swanson ended up with the Phillies after tormenting them for years as a member of the Atlanta Braves.

Getting a shortstop that would also be a blow to your division rival? Now that would put a big smile on the face of any Phillies fan.

In fact, according to one metric, Swanson ranks just barely ahead of Turner, Olney pointed out later in the Twitter thread.

If rumors are true, it sounds very likely that the Phillies will start 2023 with one of the top shortstops available in free agency. Now it’s just a matter of when a contract is signed and which player’s name is on the contract.
