Philadelphia Phillies add missing piece in Trea Turner
The Philadelphia Phillies were agonizingly close last season.
After sneaking into the playoffs as the final Wild Card team, the Phillies went on a tremendous run through the postseason. They emerged as the surprising National League champions, eventually falling in six games to the Astros in the World Series. At that time, it was clear that the Phillies needed to add a more dynamic option to the top of the lineup as their offense came up short.
Trea Turner exactly what Philadelphia Phillies lineup needs
The Phillies made certain to change that in free agency. According to Jeff Passan, the Phillies have signed Trea Turner. Fox Sports MLB reported that he will sign an 11 year deal worth $300 million to head to Philadelphia.
Turner could have been considered the top shortstop in free agency. He had posted a .298/.343/.466 batting line with 21 homers and 39 doubles in his 708 plate appearances while stealing 27 bases. His addition adds another dynamic element that the Phillies need, especially with Bryce Harper being out until close to the All Star Break after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
This signing also helps fix the middle of the Phillies’ infield. Did Gregorius imploded last season and was let go after the trade deadline. Bryson Stott was far better defensively at second base than he was at short, but he was pressed into service at the position due to Gregorius’ dismissal.
The Phillies still have work to do. Center field is an ongoing problem and they could use more pitching help. However, shortstop was arguably their biggest need heading into the offseason and they addressed that shortcoming in an emphatic manner.
The Philadelphia Phillies have their shortstop and needed leadoff hitter. Trea Turner is heading to town on an 11 year deal worth $300 million.
