New York Yankees to reportedly give Aaron Judge his C
The New York Yankees have handed Aaron Judge a historic contract.
After months of speculation, and coming close to leaving altogether, Judge is set to retire with the Yankees. He has a nine year deal worth $360 million with a full no-trade clause. He will get his wish to spend his entire career in pinstripes now that the Yankees finally paid the man.
Aaron Judge to join storied group of New York Yankees legends
Judge may get another honor to go along with that new deal. According to Bob Nightengale from USA Today, Judge will be named the Yankees’ 12th captain ahead of the 2023 season.
He will join a storied list of players to hold that honor in Yankees’ history. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Thurman Munson, and Derek Jeter are amongst the 11 previous team captains, an honor that is not handed out lightly. There was a 37 year gap between Gehrig and Munson as Yankees’ captain, as even legends such as Joe Dimaggio and Mickey Mantle were not given the honor.
It is also a role that has been vacant since Jeter retired in 2014. The Yankees were holding that spot open, waiting for someone else who would spent their career with the team and embodied their values. There may be several great players on the roster, but greatness alone does not make one worthy of such an honor.
Judge is exactly what the Yankees want in that role. He is the clean cut, uncontroversial, quiet leader that they like. His greatness, and stature in team history, only add to his gravitas. And now, he will get that coveted C to further his legacy.
Aaron Judge is set to further cement his place in New York Yankees’ history. He will reportedly be named the 12th captain in franchise history.
