Saying no to Steve Cohen’s money has been a positive for the New York Mets.

That has certainly been the case this offseason. Jacob deGrom spurned the Mets to sign in Texas, a surprising development as virtually everyone assumed he would return to the only franchise he had ever known. Instead, the Mets were left to attempt to replace the long time ace of their rotation.

That decision just spurred Cohen into action. Justin Verlander was brought in to replace deGrom. Jose Quintana was signed, solidifying the the middle of the rotation. On Thursday night, the Mets brought Brandon Nimmo back on an eight year deal worth $162 million and signed David Robertson to a one year deal worth $10 million. And they are still looking to sign Kodai Senga. The Mets payroll is now over $300 million as Cohen is showing the luxury tax does not matter whatsoever.

This matches what happened last year. The Mets wanted to bring Steven Matz back on board but he chose to sign in St. Louis. The Mets responded by signing Eduardo Escobar, Max Scherzer, Adam Ottavino, Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and acquiring Chris Bassitt. Turning down Cohen’s money just means that he will find someone else to take it.

It is a beautiful thing to see for Mets fans. Cohen said that the franchise is all in on winning a championship and he is literally putting his money where his mouth is. Having his money get turned down only makes him spend more.

Whether or not this spending spree will result in a championship remains to be seen. The Mets still need another starting pitcher and the bullpen could use another arm or two. But Cohen is clearly going to spend the money it takes to get what he wants. At this point, if Senga signs elsewhere, he may just sign the rest of the free agent class and attempt to purchase Greenland because he could.
