Yankees or Mets? Alex Rodriguez dishes on which team could rule NYC
Alex Rodriguez may have worn a New York Yankees uniform during his 22-year MLB career, but it’s clear he doesn’t have pinstriped-shaded glasses on when asked if it’s the Yankees or Mets that may be in the best position to rule the Big Apple in the near future.
ESPN MLB analyst Alex Rodriguez recently shared his thoughts on whether the Mets or Yankees are the best team in New York moving forward
Recently on a segment on ESPN’s SportsCenter, after the Yankees had signed Aaron Judge to a massive contract and the Mets had rebuilt their rotation with Justin Verlander and Jose Quintana, host Sage Steele asked Rodriguez about what Yankees fans should expect now. While the question may have been about the team calling Yankee Stadium home, the three-time MVP’s thoughts quickly turned to their cross-borough rivals.
“It’s a big day, makes them very happy, and ultimately they get a chance, hopefully, to be in a position to win a title,” Rodriguez said of the Bronx Bombers. “But there is a lot of teams out there doing a lot of smart things.
“I think there’s no smarter team right now in baseball than the New York Mets. They get Verlander, they just signed Quintana. The combination of the Mets with Steven Cohen, the owner, and Buck Showalter, who I think is a top baseball mind in the game, I think the Mets are even better positioned in the future.”
While the Yankees’ in-division rival, the Boston Red Sox, have infuriated their fan base by losing Xander Bogaerts to the San Diego Padres thanks in part to a lowball offer made to keep him, the Mets’ division rivals in Philadelphia were (along with the Mets) one of the big winners of the recent MLB Winter Meetings. What comes next for both New York teams in what should be improved divisions in 2023?
Whatever happens, one thing is for sure … there will be plenty of talk (including from well-known members of the media) throughout the season as to which New York team can really lay claim to being the best in the Big Apple, for this season and beyond.
