One could understand if Rafael Devers was frustrated with the Boston Red Sox at this point.

Extension talks have not gone anywhere. Devers has insisted upon being paid what he is worth, and while the Red Sox have moved closer to that number, nothing has happened. To make matters worse, his best friend in the game, Xander Bogaerts, has signed in San Diego. Given the failures of the front office and ownership over the past few years, Devers would appear to be entering his final few months in Boston.

Boston Red Sox still have chance with Rafael Devers

But there is still a chance. As Devers said when he was interviewed by Hector Gomez, he still wants to end his career as a member of the Red Sox. It is just a matter of a deal coming together.

Devers put together another excellent showing in 2022. He posted a .295/.358/.521 batting line in his 614 plate appearances, hitting 27 homers and 42 doubles. He made his second All Star Game last season as he continued to establish himself as one of the best third basemen in the game.

His production over the past few seasons, coupled with the fact that he will be just 27 years old as he would theoretically enter free agency, will make him one of the more coveted players on the market. At the same time, that track record and youth will need to be paid for, either on the open market or by the Red Sox.

Devers is the Red Sox last chance to change the narrative. They have typically failed to extend their own players since Chaim Bloom came on board, overvaluing free agents while looking to undercut those already on the roster. That has been the case thus far with Devers as well. While there is still a chance, the Red Sox are running out of time.

Next. Red Sox need to do more to improve in 2023. dark

Rafael Devers has said that he wants to retire as a member of the Boston Red Sox. However, if that is going to happen, they have to pay the man.
