On the surface, it would appear that the Boston Red Sox are saying the right things about Rafael Devers.
They have been clear that they want to keep Devers for the long term. General manager Chaim Bloom says that he has learned from his mistakes with Xander Bogaerts and is hoping to avoid repeating those errors with Devers. As such, it makes sense that Bloom would say that the Red Sox are willing to go “beyond reason” to get a deal done.

But there are caveats, as there always seem to be with the Red Sox. Bloom also said that there would be limitations, belying his statement that the Red Sox would go beyond reason. Considering that the two sides are reportedly “galaxies apart” in terms of the financial requirements for an extension, “beyond reason” does not appear to mean what the Red Sox think it does.
This matches their track record when it comes to their players. The Red Sox have consistently low-balled their own, making offers that were not in the same universe for Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts. Why should Devers be any different?
That track record is also matched by their inability to follow through. The Red Sox have constantly said the right things only to fall short in the end. There is no reason to believe those words any longer, even if they are the ones that the fanbase wants to hear.
In the end, their actions will be what matters. The Red Sox will need to keep Devers if these words are going to mean anything. Otherwise, that caveat of there being limitations to going beyond reason will matter more than anything else that they said, leading to yet another homegrown star departing for greener pastures elsewhere.
