It was easy to make fun of the San Francisco Giants in the wake of the Carlos Correa saga.

The Giants had their cornerstone player lined up. Correa was ready to sign on the dotted line, the press conference ready to go, with his family waiting for the moment to start. Then there were questions with his medicals, allowing the Mets to swoop in and snag the All Star shortstop to play third base.

San Francisco Giants were right about Carlos Correa after all

Well, not so fast on that one. It turns out that the Mets also have concerns with Correa’s medicals. There has been radio silence from the Mets and agent Scott Boras, something that is truly impressive when one considers how much Boras and Mets’ owner Steve Cohen enjoy the spotlight.

At this point, there is no reason to suspect that the deal will not go through. Bob Nightengale speculated that the most logical scenario is that Correa ends up in New York, although there will be language in the contract to protect the Mets if Correa’s leg issues cause him to miss significant time.

But it is notable that these leg issues are enough to put a second contract on hold. It shows that the Giants were right to back off and want to revisit that contract. While they took longer than Boras wanted, giving him the chance to peddle Correa to the Mets. In the end, the Giants may have dodged a bullet by the Mets jumping in, even if they desperately needed his bat in the middle of their lineup.

Time will tell which side made the right decision. Correa is still likely to be going to New York even with this holdup. But now, the Giants deserve some credit for sticking to their guns and refusing to take on what they considered far too much of a risk at that salary.

The San Francisco Giants were mocked for the Carlos Correa situation. Maybe, just maybe, they were right to walk away after all.
