Time to pump the brakes even more with the New York Mets and Carlos Correa.
Although nothing had changed since the Mets voiced their own concerns with his medicals, the expectation was that he would sign in New York. Other teams may have been circling and calling Scott Boras, but he claimed to be focused on making the Mets deal happen.
Deal with Carlos Correa, New York Mets may not happen after all
But that may not be the case any longer. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, it is essentially a coin flip as to whether or not Correa will be joining the Mets after all, with a 55% chance of a deal happening. The issue at hand is the belief that Correa is not willing to restructure the length or financial terms of the contract.
At the same time, Correa has to face reality. A third trek into free agency would be a terrible look, especially after two teams walked away from a contract due to his medicals. It would be unrealistic to expect that he would receive a similar deal to what the Giants and Mets had offered with yet another sojourn onto the market.
Given those circumstances, it would behoove Correa to work with the Mets in regards to adding those protections to the contract. He could still get that long term deal that would keep him with the franchise for the rest of his career and receive over $300 million provided he stays healthy. Otherwise, the Mets would have those protections they need considering the questions surrounding his ankle.
As the saying goes, pride comes before the fall. That would be the case here if the Mets deal falls apart because Correa is not willing to renegotiate. It is time to step back and let his representatives do what they need to in order for this deal to get done. Otherwise, he could face a disastrous third trip into free agency this offseason.
Carlos Correa needs his contract with the New York Mets to happen. If that involves renegotiating, then that is a step he needs to take.
