Former Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose desperately wants back in Major League Baseball’s good graces. The problem is that he cannot help himself from sabotaging his hopes.

His latest act of self-sabotage came as the clock struck 12:00 and the calendar flipped to 2023. Sport gambling is now legal in Ohio, with Rose himself placing the first legal wager in the state, betting on the Reds to lose the World Series.

Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose cannot stop himself

Let’s ignore the fact that he just burned whatever money he wagered with that bet. Also, let’s ignore that Rose was likely paid a handsome fee to place that wager, likely receiving more than he bet on the Reds. And, at the same time, let’s ignore the fact that MLB is cozying up to sports betting in some sort of unholy alliance.

The fact of the matter is that Rose was banned from the game due to his involvement with gamblers and his wagers on the Reds. It is something that he eventually admitted to after years of denials, doing so in a book so that he could earn as much money off of his admission as possible. His willingness to autograph a baseball with any inscription has not helped his cause either.

And yet, Rose is still going to try. He has once again begged commissioner Rob Manfred to let him back into the game, sending a letter with three reasons as to why he should be reinstated. His first point, where he says that he truly means it when he says that he is sorry that he bet on baseball, rings hollow given his willingness to place a wager at any given point in time.

In a way, one has to feel sorry for Rose. If he could stop himself from betting and truly show remorse, it is possible that he could get into baseball’s good graces again. But that is just not something he has been capable of doing.
