When Eric Hosmer was let go by the Boston Red Sox, it appeared as though they were ready to hand first base to Triston Casas. Well, not so fast.

According to Craig Mish and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Marlins are looking to make a deal with the Red Sox and acquire a young, controllable bat with Casas as their top priority.

Boston Red Sox cannot trade Triston Casas…can they?

The Marlins do have players that the Red Sox are interested in. Mish and Jackson reported that the Red Sox are interested in Joey Wendle and Miguel Rojas as they look to shore up the roster. However, neither or those players would be nearly enough to land a prospect of Casas’ stature.

At the same time, the Marlins do have the type of pitching needed to potentially get a deal to happen. Pablo Lopez would be a significant addition to the Red Sox rotation and would be the type of arm they need. The likes of Jesus Luzardo, Trevor Rogers, or Edward Cabrera could be enough as part of a package to bring Casas on board.

There could be something to be said for trading Casas at this point. He showed his potential during his brief time in the majors in 2022 as he proved to be a relatively tough out. Casas posted a .197/.358/.408 batting line in his 95 plate appearances, hitting five homers while drawing 19 walks and striking out 23 times. However, top prospects do not always pan out, something that the Marlins can attest to when it came to their attempts to improve their lineup.

At the same time, the Red Sox do not have a backup plan now that Hosmer was let go. While they could bring him back after a hypothetical trade, the current depth chart has Christian Arroyo, Bobby Dalbec, and Niko Goodrum behind Casas in the pecking order. That is not good enough for a team that is hoping to return to the postseason.

The Miami Marlins want Triston Casas in a deal with the Boston Red Sox. Moving Casas has to be a non-starter at this point in time.
