New York Yankees make significant addition to front office
The New York Yankees have already had a strong offseason in free agency. That strong showing has gotten even better.
On Tuesday, the Yankees announced that they have brought Brian Sabean back into the fold. He will be serving as the executive advisor to Brian Cashman.
Brian Sabean comes full circle with return to New York Yankees
Sabean’s baseball career began with the Yankees back in 1985. He was initially hired as a scout, working his way up the ladder as the Yankees’ director of scouting and vice president of player development/scouting, a title he held until he joined the Giants back in 1993.
He was initially the Giants’ assistant to the general manager and vice president of scouting/player personnel. Sabean would hold those titles until 1996 when he was promoted to the general manager role, a position he held through 2014 when he was promoted to the executive vice president of baseball operations role. In between, his moves led the Giants to four World Series appearances and three titles as San Francisco earned seven postseason berths.
Times had changed with the Giants. Farhan Zaidi was hired as the new president of baseball operations in San Francisco, with Sabean being moved to an advisory role. Considering that he appeared to be phased out with the Giants, it was not a surprise that his name came up for openings with the Marlins and Mets, although the two organizations went in different directions.
Now he is back where it all began. Sabean will add an old school vibe and a different voice to an organization that needs it. Cashman may be doing a solid job, but after all these years as the Yankees’ general manager, someone needs to give the front office a different feel. Sabean can do just that.
