Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks battling cancer
Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks was given an unexpected blow as he began getting ready for spring training.
Hendriks announced via his Instagram page that he has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that he will undergo treatment beginning on Monday. He also added that he is looking forward to getting back on the mound as quickly as possible.
Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks in biggest fight of his career
As for the White Sox, they have made it clear that they will respect Hendriks’ privacy during his battles. They issued a statement saying they do not anticipate any updates on Hendriks’ return to the mound and playing status prior to Opening Day. As that is more than two and a half months away, it may be quite some time until there is clarity on his condition.
Losing Hendriks for any length of time will be a major blow to the White Sox bullpen. He has emerged as one of the best closers in the game in recent years, a shutdown option in the ninth inning who would be key to Chicago’s hopes of returning to the postseason.
That was the case last season as well. Hendriks continued his dominant ways as he posted a 2.81 ERA and a 1.040 WHiP over his 57.2 innings, notching 37 saves while striking out 85 batters and issuing just 16 walks. Hendriks had continued to be a force of nature as he shut down the opposition.
Now he is facing the biggest battle of his career. He will attack cancer with that same intensity and passion, striving for success as he does everything possible to emerge victorious. Getting through this battle will make those appearances in the ninth inning seem so much easier.
