Former New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka had been a forgotten man when it came to free agency.

He had signed a two year contract with the Rakuten Golden Eagles prior to the 2021 season, ending a seven year run in the majors. The thought had been that he would look to return stateside once that deal ran out, likely returning to the Yankees after they had reset their place in the luxury tax.

Reunion with New York Yankees not yet on horizon for Masahiro Tanaka

Instead, there was never much buzz about a return for Tanaka. The Yankees had clearly moved on when they signed Carlos Rodon to a six year deal and it is unclear as to whether or not Tanaka would want to pitch elsewhere. As such, he has signed a one year deal worth 475 million yen to return to the Golden Eagles for the 2023 campaign.

This contract marks a significant pay cut as Tanaka had earned 900 million yen in 2021 and 2022. He had performed well over that time, posting a 3.16 ERA and a 1.098 WHiP over his 318.2 innings, striking out 252 batters with 59 walks. However, he only won a combined 13 games, leading to his referring to his efforts over the past two years as “undignified” and a “betrayal of the fans’ hopes.”

It is possible that this is just a one year delay to his return to the majors. Tanaka referred to unfinished business as well despite his solid rates. As he would be 35 years old next season, and would likely be a much more affordable option than most similar pitchers in free agency, it would not be a surprise to see him consider a return to the majors in 2024 if he wins more games next year.

At the same time, there could be an opening in the Yankees rotation. Luis Severino and Frankie Montas are currently slated to enter free agency during the 2023-24 offseason, potentially giving Tanaka an opening in the back of the Yankees rotation. However, it is a matter of if he wants to come stateside or not.
