Carlos Correa had reportedly loved his time with the Minnesota Twins. He is about to extend that time in surprising fashion.

According to Jeff Passan, Correa has now signed with the Twins after his deal with the Mets fell through. He is guaranteed $200 million over this six year deal, with a four year vesting option worth another $70 million. This time, there is no risk of the deal falling through as Jon Heyman reports that his physical is complete and the Twins do not have any concerns about Correa’s ankle.

Minnesota Twins get their man in Carlos Correa after all

And so ends a saga that saw Correa sign with ten percent of the league over the past few weeks. He was initially set to be a member of the Giants, only for the deal to be put on hold due to those concerns about his ankle. This allowed the Mets to swoop in approximately 12 hours later to presumably bring him on board, with team owner Steve Cohen calling Correa “the missing piece.”

Instead, the Twins get to repeat history. They had emerged as the surprising winners of the Carlos Correa Sweepstakes last offseason when he signed a three year deal worth $105 million that included two opt outs. After posting an excellent .291/.366/.467 batting line with 22 homers and 24 doubles over his 590 plate appearances, it was not a surprise that Correa exercised that clause after the 2022 season.

As time went on, and questions with Correa’s medicals persisted, it began to feel inevitable that he would return to Minnesota. Byron Buxton had said that Correa wanted to be in Minnesota from the beginning of the offseason; it was just a matter of the Twins being able to make a deal come together financially. Those ankle concerns provided the opening that the Twins needed.

Correa may still be the missing piece. The Twins continued to have designs on contending in the AL Central, even with his expected departure. Christian Vazquez was brought in to solve their problems behind the plate while Joey Gallo added some needed power potential to the lineup. Bringing Correa back makes that group all the more dangerous. Now it is a matter of staying healthy.
