Los Angeles Dodgers newest player to undergo surgery
Miguel Rojas was supposed to solve the Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop question, at least for 2023. It just may take some time before he gets on the diamond.
According to Craig Mish from the Miami Herald, Rojas has a minor setback on his wrist after undergoing surgery in October. He will need another procedure, although that knowledge did not cause any problems with making the trade happen.
Los Angeles Dodgers not concerned with Miguel Rojas injury news
At this point, it is uncertain as to when Rojas will have that follow-up procedure. The Dodgers, for their part, do not appear to have any concerns about his availability for spring training or the start of the regular season. He is still expected to serve in a utility capacity around the diamond and, depending on how Gavin Lux performs at short, could take over the position.
Rojas certainly has the glove to handle such a role. He has been a Gold Glove caliber shortstop throughout his career, saving 36 runs in his 719 games at the position. He has also handled himself well defensively at the other infield positions, even if he does not have as much time there.
While his glove is clearly his calling card in the majors, Rojas has not been terrible with the bat. He has posted a .260/.314/.358 batting line in his 3082 plate appearances, hitting 139 doubles and 39 homers. He does not draw many walks, but he also makes plenty of contact as he has struck out just 387 times.
Rojas is going to get plenty of action for the Dodgers. Both middle infield spots are not exactly set in stone and Justin Turner’s departure leaves a hole at third. As long as he is healthy and his wrist issues are behind him, Rojas could be a key part of the Dodgers’ hopes this season.
