Miami Marlins reportedly showing interest in Aroldis Chapman
There has been plenty of focus on the Miami Marlins need to upgrade their lineup. However, there are plenty of holes in the bullpen as well, especially in the latter innings as the Marlins do not have a proven option for the ninth inning.
That could change in the next few days. According to Jon Heyman, the Marlins are one of several teams considering the former Yankees closer for their bullpen.
Aroldis Chapman makes sense for Miami Marlins
The Marlins seemed to be a perfect location for Chapman once he became a free agent. He lives in southern Florida with the Marlins close to his home. There is a vibrant Cuban community in the area that could look up to him. It is a relatively low pressure environment where he could rebuild his value.
The 2022 season was an abject disaster for the former Yankees closer. He fought his command as he battled injuries throughout the year, losing his spot in the ninth inning and eventually leaving the team when he could not be guaranteed a place on the postseason roster. Throughout those issues, he posted a 4.46 ERA and a 1.431 WHiP over his 36.1 innings, striking out 43 batters with 28 walks.
Despite those struggles, Chapman still has that Official Proven Closer designation, making him someone that will get chances. He is likely looking at a one year, make good contract at this point, with some team hoping that the soon to be 35 year old still has something left in the tank.
Likewise, the Marlins have designs on contending for a playoff spot. While they have not done as much to upgrade their lineup as hoped, adding Jean Segura as their biggest acquisition, they do have a stellar rotation. Adding Chapman to hypothetically stabilize the ninth inning, and finally making a move to improve the lineup, could go a long way to making those hopes a reality.
The Miami Marlins are reportedly one of several teams considering bringing Aroldis Chapman on board. He could be that bullpen piece they need.
