Let’s take a look at some of the recent MLB news you might have missed, including a trade between the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies.
Colorado Rockies news: Connor Seabold acquired in trade with Boston Red Sox
The Rockies filled out their 40-man roster on Tuesday by acquiring Seabold from Boston in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Seabold was selected in the third round of the 2017 MLB draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, then traded to Boston in 2020. The 26-year-old appeared in six games for the Red Sox over the course of the last two seasons, and made the most of his time with Triple-A Worcester, going 12-5 with a 3.39 ERA through 30 starts.
He is expected to give the Rockies starting pitching depth and potentially compete for a job in the rotation with Antonio Senzatela shelved during the early part of the season after undergoing ACL surgery.
Seabold’s acquisition is one of several the Rockies have made this offseason to try to shore up their pitching depth, including picking up former Milwaukee reliever Brent Suter, who recently told us about the nickname he is trying to leave behind with the Brewers.
Seattle Mariners news: Pitcher added off waivers from Arizona Diamondbacks
On Tuesday, the Mariners claimed right-handed pitcher J.B. Bukauskas off waivers from the Diamondbacks. In a corresponding move, Seattle designated outfielder Alberto Rodriguez for assignment.
Bukauskas last appeared on an MLB mound in 2021, appearing in 21 games (all in relief) for Arizona. The 26-year-old right-hander, who was selected 15th overall by the Houston Astros in the 2017 draft, compiled a 7.79 ERA/5.77 FIP/1.788 WHIP and will likely be a depth piece for the Mariners.
While his 2021 numbers may not have been great, Bukauskas recovered from a stint on the 60-day injured list with a Grade 2 teres major muscle strain last season to post a 2.66 ERA in 20.1 innings for Triple-A Reno.
Los Angeles Dodgers news: Second base in play for Mookie Betts at WBC
In each of the last two seasons, Betts has seen time at second base in seven games for the Dodgers. While it has been sporadic, the former MVP has shown that he can fill in at the position when needed (he has 30 career games at second base). That versatility may show up for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic as well.
