Colorado Rockies put cap on another pathetic offseason
Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort claims that the team’s inability to reach the postseason since 2018 is not good enough. His actions indicate otherwise.
On Friday, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reported that the Rockies are likely done putting their roster together. While general manager Bill Schmidt did indicate that they will be looking for depth pieces and pitching, the Rockies are essentially done with the offseason.
Colorado Rockies continue living in land of delusion
The Rockies’ big moves this offseason? They signed Jose Urena and Pierce Johnson, the latter a replacement for Carlos Estevez. Connor Seabold and Nolan Jones were brought in via trade. Brent Suter was a waiver acquisition. And the Rockies signed several players to minor league contracts, the most notable of which would be Harold Castro. That’s it.
And that is not nearly good enough. The rest of the division has improved or, at the very worst, stayed the same. One could even argue that the Rockies took a step backward this offseason as they failed to land anyone that could be considered an upgrade to their roster.
Those signings and trades do not tell the full story. The Rockies are going to be counting on prospects such as Eziquel Tovar, Zac Veen, and Drew Romo to make an impact in the near future. It is also a great deal of pressure to put on those younger players to count on them to be the difference makers in a difficult NL West.
It also speaks volumes to the level of delusion that remains in Colorado. The Rockies feel that they have a contending team despite the evidence of the past few years. They have generally sat out free agency or the trade deadline because they feel they have a good enough roster and are still in contention. The reality is that they are only deluding themselves.
The Colorado Rockies are essentially done for the offseason. And once again, they have not done nearly enough to actually contend.
