Los Angeles Angels two way superstar Shohei Ohtani is undoubtedly a prized possession for the Angels. Any player who is capable of hitting 30 home runs and posting a sub 3 earned run average in the same season is absolutely a player that a team would like to keep around for the long run.

However, with the Angels’ uncertainty about their roster and the possible reluctance of owner Arte Moreno to pay Ohtani, the door could be open for other teams to explore the superstar from Japan. The New York Mets and owner Steve Cohen could be one of those teams.

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen interested in Shohei Ohtani

According to an article by SNY’s Andy Martino, Steve Cohen has started talking “openly” to Mets officials about signing Ohtani come winter. This should not come as a surprise for any Mets fans or baseball fans in general, as Cohen had made it known that he is committed to doing whatever it takes to win a championship. New York has already dished out plenty of contracts this winter, so adding Ohtani next winter would certainly raise the payroll, albeit for a reason most if not all fans of the Mets would welcome with open arms.

Why Shohei Ohtani fits in perfectly for the New York Mets

Ohtani would be a welcome addition for any of major league baseball’s 30 ballclubs. However, he fills a couple of needs for the Mets that would of course come at a premium price. New York has been looking to add some pop to their lineup for some time now. Ohtani and his expected 30 + homers would solve that issue.

The more pressing problem the Mets have right now is their age of starting pitching. New York’s pitching staff is one of the best in the league on paper. However, co-aces Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer are both in their final seasons. Ohtani, at 28 years old, would give the Mets a young controllable arm, at the highest level of performance.

The New York Mets certainly would be a prime destination for one of baseball’s biggest stars in Shohei Ohtani. New York, big market, the fans, and everything in between are all reasons the two way star from Japan should wisely choose New York. Therefore, expect Steve Cohen to be all in this winter for Shohei Ohtani.
