Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort has created a state of delusion that has permeated the entire organization.

From his beliefs that the Rockies were a playoff caliber team over the past three seasons to the thoughts that what they have is good enough to their refusal to wave the white flag when they are obviously out of the postseason hunt, his overarching delusion has caused a great deal of harm to the organization. Those delusions of competence continue into 2023 as Monfort stated that he feels the Rockies can be a .500 team this season.

Dick Monfort continues damaging Colorado Rockies with delusions

Monfort deserves some credit at least. He has not claimed that the Rockies are going to the postseason this year – although his statement that “with the expanded playoffs … who knows what happens?” is entirely within that realm of ridiculousness.

Nonetheless, those 81 wins needed to reach .500 may be a long shot. FanDuel Sportsbook has the Rockies at 62.5 wins for the season, considering it equally probable that they will lose 100 games. Considering the other four teams in the division either improved or won 111 games last season, that 62.5 win total is more likely to be correct than Monfort’s prediction.

But that will not change anything for the Rockies. They will continue to go forth and have offseasons where they feel that signing Jose Urena and Pierce Johnson is enough major league activity in free agency. Nolan Jones and Connor Seabold may end up being solid enough trades, but neither move screams championship. Instead, it is another year of tinkering around the edges because health was the only problem last season.

It is that sort of thinking that is keeping the Rockies from making any headway. Their mentality that they can operate as an insulated franchise, keeping their own and refusing to make necessary moves, will keep them from achieving Monfort’s lofty goals. Of course, those goals and his fervent belief that they are good enough is what is stopping them from getting there. It is quite the catch 22.

Dick Monfort thinks the Colorado Rockies will be a .500 team in 2023. Considering the state of the roster, even that goal is unrealistic.
