If Zack Greinke was going to return for the 2023 season, it was going to be with the Kansas City Royals.

While there had been rumors that other teams were interested, it was still a matter of time before the two sides made a deal come together. According to Bob Fescoe from 610 Sports in Kansas City, the Royals and Greinke have come to an agreement that will be announced on Tuesday.

Kansas City Royals keep Zack Greinke where he belongs

This may well be the final season for Zack Greinke. He is 39 years old and the 2023 season would mark his 20th year in the majors. If so, it is fitting that Greinke’s career will wrap up where it began, coming full circle as he exits with the team that he became a star on.

Greinke is not the same pitcher he was. His days as an All Star caliber pitcher are in the rearview window and fading further away. However, he has still been able to get outs due to his innate knowledge of pitching and his ability to spot his arsenal, posting a 3.68 ERA and a 1343 WHiP over his 137 innings, striking out 73 batters with 27 walks.

He is also more than someone that can fill out the Royals’ rotation. His baseball knowledge is almost legendary at this point, as is his ability to see things on the diamond that others cannot. If he is able to pass on any of that wisdom to the Royals’ young arms and help develop them into the pitchers they were projected to be, he will be well worth the price tag.

Zack Greinke is coming home for one more go around. He is set to return for the 2023 season, signing a one year contract with the Kansas City Royals.
