The Los Angeles Angels desperately need to add pieces to their bullpen. This is something they are aware of as well, as they have reportedly been looking at left handed relievers in free agency.

One arm, in particular, appears to be on their radar. According to Bob Nightengale from USA Today, the Angels are interested in Zack Britton.

Los Angeles Angels interest in Zack Britton depends on price tag

This interest comes with a caveat. Britton is believed to be looking for approximately $9 million this year, a financial commitment that the Angels are not willing to meet.

One can understand their reticence. Britton had a combined 19 innings over the past two seasons as he dealt with bone chips in his elbow in 2021 and underwent Tommy John surgery, costing him most of 2022. He understandably struggled when he was on the mound, posting a 6.16 ERA and a 2.000 WHiP, striking out 17 batters with 20 walks. That production is not worth what Britton is asking for.

At the same time, one can understand why he is seeking that amount. He was one of the better relievers in the game from 2014 through 2020, an All Star closer for the Orioles before settling in as a dominant setup man in New York. Britton notched a 1.84 ERA and a 1.051 WHiP over his 367.1 innings, striking out 347 batters with 133 walks. His $9 million price tag would be a bargain for that production.

The Angels have several needs in their bullpen. A left handed pitcher in the latter innings is sorely needed. The closer situation is up in the air. Britton, with his experience in the ninth inning and his track record of success, could be what the Angels need. It is just a matter of getting the money to work.
