In Philadelphia, there are four things that the people of city know: freedom, disappointment, the drive to succeed, and sports. The people of Philadelphia eat, breathe and sleep sports. Their blood is a mix of midnight green, blue and gold, orange and black, pinstripe red, and, of course, the colors of freedom (red, white, and blue). There is no length nor distance that Philly fans will travel to support their beloved Eagles, 76ers, Flyers, and Phillies.

Outside of Philadelphia, the media and fans know four things about the people of this city: throwing snowballs at Santa, throwing bracelets on the ice, drunk fans who want to fight nonstop, and batteries being thrown at opposing pitchers. To the outside world, Philadelphia fans are viewed as degenerates who don’t deserve sports teams (or good things in general).

The athletes, however, see the passion, the love and the energy that the fans bring night in and night out. The players begin to become a part of this city and feel the love. Most athletes would prefer to play in Philly than against Philly, especially in the playoffs.

Philadelphia is special and the Eagles, 76ers, Flyers, and Phillies players who call it home, are big fans of their fans.

In fact, this was a big part of Trea Turner’s decision on not only playing here but calling it home.

While we can also thank his best friend Bryce Harper, Philly fans need to thank themselves for Turner wanting to be here. This is Turner’s full introductory press conference, in case you missed it.

In fact, there have been times where players end up take less money to be in Philadelphia. While Turner is one, the most recent player to do take a pay cut of sorts is James Bradberry of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Regardless of the sport, once athletes get here, they tend to want to stay here. If, as an athlete you give everything you can to the city of Philly, in turn, Philadelphia fans will give you all the support and love you could ever ask for. All that is asked of the athlete is just that he leaves everything out on the field … or ice … or court … or diamond.
