In the wake of the league-wide celebration of Jackie Robinson Day on Saturday, let’s take a look at some of the latest MLB news and notes, including tidbits on the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs.
MLB news: Philadelphia Phillies may be getting Bryce Harper back soon
For the Philadelphia Phillies, finding an answer at first base has not been easy since the injury to Rhys Hoskins during spring training. However, one may be coming soon in the form of former National League MVP Bryce Harper, who has reportedly been working out at first base in order to give his team a boost upon his return.
And that return could be coming without a minor league rehab assignment, according to Phillies manager Rob Thomson.
There is no set timetable for Harper’s return. However, it’s possible if all goes well that he could be back with the Phillies by Memorial Day. Could he be back at a new position? It’s something to watch as the Phillies look for answers at first base.
MLB news: Cody Bellinger, Jason Heyward reverse roles in Cubs-Dodgers matchup
Cody Bellinger made his return with the Chicago Cubs to Chavez Ravine this weekend, marking his first time being there since he was non-tendered by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the offseason. On the flip side, Jason Heyward, now with the Dodgers, was matched up against his former team (Cubs).
Somehow, the baseball gods decided to make sure there was a memorable play involving both of them on Saturday night.
Who says baseball doesn’t have a sense of humor? The same player (Bellinger) warmly greeted by Dodgers fans on Friday night (and even getting a weird pitch clock violation in the process) was booed for his play one day later. As Jerry Seinfeld once quipped, baseball fans do indeed root for laundry.
