There is something special happening in Seattle. Finally, the Seattle Mariners may have found an ace in rookie prospect Bryce Miller. Through three starts to begin his career, Miller has done something historic.
On Saturday, Miller made his third start, throwing seven scoreless innings. Miller only allowed three runners on base, with three hits, and had no walks. Astonishingly, as fantastic as this outing was, it was his worst game of the season.
In his two previous starts, Miller struck out 15 batters while only allowing five runners on base. He is carrying a 2-0 record with 18 strikeouts to one walk in 19 innings. To top that, he has only allowed one run in three games.
According to MLB.com, that’s the fewest runners allowed over three games to start a career since 1901. When asked about his incredible start, he said, “It’s been a lot of fun so far,” Miller told Adam Jude of The Seattle Times. “You know, gone out, throwing it over the plate, and things have gone my way.” Jude continued by asking Miller if it was easy, he replied, “So far, we’ll see if it keeps up.” with an enormous grin on his face.
Miller’s dominance has helped push the Seattle Mariners out of a losing record for the first time this season. The Mariners (20-19) are now holding on to second place in the AL East.
Too early to tell on Seattle Mariners ace prospect
Let’s not get caught up in all the hype just yet. In three games at Double-A for the Arkansas Travelers before being called up, Miller was not impressive. He was 0-2 with an ERA of 6.41 in four games, allowing 15 runs in 19 innings of work.
Miller’s success is most likely attributed to his favorable matchups against the Detroit Tigers and Oakland A’s (plus an outing against the Houston Astros), as well as a lack of big-league scouting reports. While it’s hard to assume Miller will keep up this record-setting pace, it will be interesting to follow his next few starts. Miller will face the Atlanta Braves on Friday for his next test.
