In a recent development, Jacob deGrom, the star pitcher for the Texas Rangers, has been placed on the 60-day injured list due to elbow inflammation. He was initially placed in the 15-day IL in April for the same injury. This setback further intensifies the debate surrounding the Texas Rangers’ decision to sign deGrom to a 5-year, $185 million contract. In my previous article on Nolan Writin’ (FanSided’s Texas Rangers Site), I explored transitioning deGrom to a closer role to mitigate injury risks and optimize the team’s playoff potential.

In this follow-up article, I will provide additional context and address the concerns raised by readers, shedding light on the potential challenges posed by high-velocity pitching and the importance of rest and recovery in preventing injuries.

Recent research studies have highlighted the relationship between high-velocity pitching and increased injury risk for pitchers. The repetitive stress placed on the arm when throwing at such intensity can lead to acute injuries, chronic overuse issues, and structural damage. In addition, a study conducted by professionals from Weill Cornell Medicine published in the Arthroscopy Journal emphasized that pitchers with higher pitch velocities are more susceptible to elbow injuries, mainly UCL tears.

These findings raise concerns about Jacob deGrom’s long-term durability and susceptibility to injury with the Texas Rangers.

Rest and recovery play a pivotal role in a pitcher’s ability to maintain optimal performance and reduce the risk of injury. As a result, researchers have emphasized the need for workload monitoring and implementing injury prevention strategies to prioritize and maintain players’ performance levels.

By transitioning deGrom to the closer role, the Texas Rangers can offer him an altered workload and shorter outings, allowing his body to recuperate more effectively. This strategic shift may minimize the impact of existing or future injuries and contribute to his overall longevity in the game.

DeGrom typically throws 80-100 pitches in a single game as a starter, subjecting his arm to exceptional stress and fatigue. Intense exertion and repetitive motion increase the risk of acute injuries and structural damage. On the other hand, as a closer, deGrom would throw fewer pitches spread out over the week. Although the pitches are still thrown at a high velocity, the overall workload is significantly lower.

This lower workload offers more opportunities for recovery, reducing the risk of immediate harm. However, it’s important to note that cumulative high-velocity pitches in multiple outings can still contribute to chronic overuse injuries over time.

Jacob deGrom’s performance this season with the Texas Rangers has been outstanding. In six appearances, he has maintained an impressive 2.67 ERA with a 2-0 record. In 30.1 innings pitched, he has recorded 19 strikeouts and has allowed only 11 earned runs, showcasing his consistency on the mound. Additionally, he has proven to be a dominant force with an impressive WHIP of 0.758 and a K/9 ratio of 13.4. These statistics further highlight the immense talent and impact that Jacob deGrom brings to the Texas Rangers pitching rotation when he is in it.

Given deGrom’s injury history and the substantial investment made by the Texas Rangers, it is crucial to explore alternative roles that can prolong his career and maximize his impact. While the idea of a $37 million (actually $30 million this year and $40 million next season) closer might raise eyebrows, the potential benefits of having a healthy and dominant deGrom in the bullpen cannot be ignored. In addition, the front office can balance the financial aspect by making additional moves to fortify the starting rotation through trades or other acquisitions.

Transitioning deGrom to the closer role should not be taken lightly. The decision requires a careful evaluation from the Texas Rangers front office, with input from medical professionals, coaching staff, and deGrom himself. The primary goal should be to find the right balance that maximizes deGrom’s effectiveness, safeguards his health, and aligns with the team’s competitive aspirations. Prioritizing long-term player health and the team’s pursuit of success is essential when facing this challenging reality.

Jacob deGrom’s recent injury update has raised concerns about the Texas Rangers’ decision to sign him to a lucrative contract. The risks associated with high-velocity pitching and the importance of rest and recovery cannot be ignored. While transitioning deGrom to the closer role presents potential benefits, it must be approached cautiously.

Balancing innovation, protecting investments, and maximizing playoff potential requires thoroughly evaluating various factors. Ultimately, the decision should prioritize long-term player health while aligning with the team’s competitive goals in this challenging situation.
