St. Louis Cardinals make a trade that has fan base roasting the team

With their season slipping away, the St. Louis Cardinals made a trade on Friday. Based on the reaction of the Cardinals fan base, it wasn’t exactly the game-changing trade those fans were looking for from the franchise.

St. Louis Cardinals make trade, get roasted by their fans

On Friday, the Cardinals announced they had acquired infielder/outfielder Richie Palacios from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Memphis. The 26-year-old Palacios has not seen action for the Guardians this season, but did slash .232/.293/.286 in 123 plate appearances over 54 games last season. This season, at Triple-A, Palacios is batting just .217 in 217 plate appearances with three home runs and 30 RBI. He also struck out 41 times while drawing 41 walks.

Judging from the reactions of Cardinals fans on social media (read the comments under the official Cardinals announcement), the move wasn’t just one that didn’t excite them (based on the stats posted by Palacios, it’s easy to see why), but it was also one that showed a growing sense of frustration with the franchise. Expected by many to walk away with the National League Central this season, the Cardinals enter Friday’s play at the bottom of the division with the NL’s worst record at 27-42. The panic button has definitely been hit by the Cardinals fan base as this is a make-or-break month and time is growing short for the team to make a large enough improvement to even come close to getting back into the race for October.

Make a trade? Cardinals fans are interested in that. Trade for someone not even on the Major League roster who hasn’t really made an impact in Cleveland even when given a chance? Cardinals fans scratch their heads and sigh. They also wonder if and when the team is actually going to try something different (including bringing in some new faces) to reverse its fortunes or if a sale is coming at the MLB trade deadline.

Of note with the transaction was, to make room on the 40-player roster for the arrival of Palacios, outfielder Tyler O’Neill was transferred to the 60-day injured list after suffering a back injury. In what has been a headline- and drama-filled season, O’Neill has slashed just .228/.283/.337 in 99 plate appearances.
