MLB: San Francisco Giants charging up the NL West standings
Don’t look now, but Gabe Kapler’s San Francisco Giants are playing some of the best baseball in June. How good have they been? Their weekend sweep of the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium moved them into second place in the NL West, ahead of their rivals.
The Giants have busted out offensively, including dropping 15 on the Dodgers Saturday night, and have been doing it up and down their line, putting up several crooked numbers in the process. They have had nine different players homer and 12 different collect at least one double. J.D. Davis is hitting .333 in the month, including breaking open their win over Los Angeles Saturday with a grand slam after returning to the lineup from an ankle injury for the Giants.
How good has the Giants’ pitching been? Logan Webb is the only starter with two wins in the month, while Taylor Rogers, who is having a good season out of the bullpen, has two in relief. San Francisco will get a good test to close out the month with four games at home against the San Diego Padres, then three against the Diamondbacks, before heading East to play the Toronto Blue Jays and Mets.
Can these four teams finish the month strong? If so, they are four teams who as close as a couple of weeks ago looked like it was going to be a long summer for them. Now a good month has put them back in the race with an expanded postseason field.
