With the MLB trade deadline now just a few days away, we are getting a better sense of which members of the St. Louis Cardinals could be on the move via trade.
St. Louis Cardinals rumors: These are the players who could be traded
According to a tweet from Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the current members of the St. Louis Cardinals who are “receiving interest in and considering offers in some cases for” include pitchers Jack Flaherty, Jordan Hicks, Ryan Helsley, Jordan Montgomery, Chris Stratton, and Giovanny Gallegos. The list also includes outfielders Dylan Carlson, Alec Burleson and Tyler O’Neill, as well as infielder Nolan Gorman.
Goold did not list Nolan Arenado or Paul Goldschmidt, further strengthening the case that those two corners of the infield will continue to be members of the Cardinals past the trade deadline.
There have been plenty of rumors floating around regarding the 10 players that Goold mentioned in his tweet, including a rumored deal with the New York Yankees that could involve Carlson and net the Cardinals pitching prospects in return. Whichever player is discussed in trades coming from St. Louis, it’s clear that St. Louis president of baseball operations John Mozeliak wants to get controllable assets back in return that can help the team retool and rebuild to compete in the 2024 campaign, with Mozeliak recently saying, “all decisions or all moves we do really will try to set us up for next year.”
With Adam Wainwright retiring and Flaherty and Montgomery on the list of potential trade chips, it’s obvious that St. Louis is looking to rebuild its rotation in time for next season. Goold has written that Seattle starting pitcher Logan Gilbert “is of interest to the Cardinals, according to a source.” However, if St. Louis is interested in a deal like that, there are some roadblocks to work through for it to become a reality.
Which St. Louis Cardinals will be on the move at the MLB trade deadline? We’re starting to get a very good idea of the possibilities.
