It was supposed to be a moment for St. Louis Cardinals fans to celebrate, but New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso made sure to steal the spotlight with a shocking move.
Pete Alonso takes away moment from Masyn Winn of the St. Louis Cardinals
With heralded rookie Masyn Winn making his Major League debut in Friday night’s matchup between the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, there was plenty of excitement in the air from Cardinals fans who were waiting to get a glimpse of one of the potential future cornerstones of the franchise.
In the bottom of the fifth, Winn recorded what would be his first hit as a member of the Cardinals, beating out an infield single as Alonso tried to make a stretch at first base to record the out. However, it’s what happened after Winn reached base that has the blood of Cardinals fans boiling.
If you’ll notice at the end of the video above, Alonso looks like he is going to give the ball back to the Cardinals to help the team preserve it to commemorate Winn’s first MLB hit. However, Alonso suddenly seems to change his mind, throwing the ball into the stands behind the Cardinals dugout.
It’s not exactly clear what caused Alonso to have a change of heart, and he’ll likely be asked about the move in the postgame interviews. However, this isn’t the first time the Mets and Cardinals have not had things go smoothly when they met at Busch Stadium. During last year’s meeting between the two teams, a brawl broke out after Nolan Arenado was plunked by a pitch and Alonso and Cardinals coach Stubby Clapp got into it during the melee, with Clapp throwing Alonso to the ground and Alonso issuing some tough words afterwards.
Perhaps Alonso was waiting a year to get his revenge on the Cardinals, but to do it with Winn’s first hit seems a little over-the-top.
Was that really the case? Was this a year in the making? We’ll find out more after the game.
UPDATE: Alonso explained his actions after the game, apologizing several times and calling it “a bad brain fart.” We wrote about it here and you can hear Alonso’s thoughts below..
