With the MLB postseason set to begin in less than a month, there are plenty of division and postseason seeding races that will likely go down to the final few games of the 2023 regular season. However, there are already some MLB teams that have had their postseason fate sealed.
On September 7, which teams have been officially eliminated from the MLB postseason?
Looking at the MLB standings, there are five teams that have already been eliminated from winning their division. There are three in the National League (the Colorado Rockies, New York Mets and Washington Nationals) and two in the American League (the Kansas City Royals and the Oakland A’s). Of those five teams, three (Colorado, Kansas City and Oakland) are on pace to lose 100 games this season.
If that happens, it would be a first for the Colorado, as the franchise is one of just two MLB teams (along with the Los Angeles Angels) that has never lost 100 games in a season. While Rockies fans are hopeful that finally reaching the 100-loss milestone might result in some changes in how the franchise is run, this season’s disappointment will likely be pinned on numerous injuries, including a starting rotation that was decimated early in the campaign.
Of the teams on the eliminated list for divisions, certainly the Mets can be considered the biggest disappointment of the bunch. With a record-setting payroll to start the season, New York was expected to once again challenge the Atlanta Braves for not only the top of the NL East, but also a shot at being the NL representative in the World Series. However, the Mets never found their rhythm and sold off some of their prized offseason acquisitions at the MLB trade deadline.
While all of those teams mentioned above may be eliminated from winning their division, only the Royals and A’s have been officially ousted from playoff consideration.
